Throwback Thursday: "Sweet Thing" x Chaka Khan & Rufus

The holidays always put me in the mood for real old school R&B and here's a favorite! Chaka Khan singing "Sweet Thing" circa 1975. The voice, the sound, the lyrics, this is R&B at its best! If you love hip-hop, you have to love Ms. Khan and what she and countless other artists of her era did for urban music. Listen, Love, Learn and BE THANKFUL!!!

"I will love you anyway, even if you can not stay.
I think you are the one for me. Here is where you ought to be."

NEW: "Pretty Lil Heart" x Robin Thicke

Robin and his soulful sound are back with "Pretty Lil Heart," a typically Robin-Thicke-jazzy record that has Robin asking his lady for some affirmation of their love affair. The record features Lil Wayne at the beginning and the verse is ok. Typical Wayne but nothing that really stands out. Honestly, the song can do without Wayne's verse because its blues-infused melody with Robin Thicke's sexy, smooth and breathy vocals don't need any help at all. This song just feels good! Plus, to listen to a man ask his lady to reaffirm their love in words and actions all while proclaiming his love for her is the type of reciprocal relationship women dream of so it will definitely have the ladies swooning!

Miami's Local Music Scene & The Best in Dade Awards 2011

About two weeks ago I had the privilege of attending the SECOND ANNUAL BEST IN DADE AWARDS hosted by Street Connect DJs. The show, held at SoBe Live in South Beach was the real deal honoring the BEST in Miami-Dade County's hip-hop and entertainment scene. For a full list of winners, CLICK HERE.

More than just bringing together Miami-Dade's rising stars, the Award Show proves that Miami's local scene is very much alive and teeming with untapped talent. SoBe Live, South Beach's premiere hip-hop performance venue and was packed mostly with artists, producers, promoters, DJs, industry insiders and fans... but not nearly enough fans. South Florida is a gold-mine of raw talent and most of it's residents are completely unaware. When groups like the NMB Stunnaz hit the stage, the energy cast into the crowd was electric and performances by MisLP and Young Spook were fantastic. The show even brought out some of Dade's veterans with acts like Piccalo hitting the stage. But a performance by YD, a rapper from Overtown really shut down the show completely!

If you could bottle and sell the undeniable talent exuded from this young group of artists, producers and DJs, you would make millions! The thing is, we can sell it, but why aren't South Floridians buying into the local hip-hop scene? These artists are working hard and making good music. There is definitely a South Florida sound that these artists, producers and DJs have tapped into and are branding. Acts like Rick Ross and Trick Daddy are only the tip of the iceberg and its time Miamians paid attention and showed love to the local scene.

Best in Dade serves to honor those who stay on the grind in an industry that often doesn't show enough love and recognition to those who haven't made it yet. These individuals work diligently at their craft and what Street Connect has done is more than just recognizing the people that work in the local industry but they shed light on a local scene that is still very underground.

I encourage you to check out an underground hip-hop station (Streets FM 89.1, Heavy 92.7, Da Blaze 98.7, StreetConnect Radio 107.1, etc), attend a local artist show or performance and support South Florida's growing and thriving local music scene. You will not be disappointed!

Salute to Street Connect DJs for putting on the show and giving love to the local scene! Salute to all of the artist, producers, promoters, DJs, entertainers, grinders, hustlers, businesses, publicists, A&Rs, bloggers, media personnel and FANS who attended the show and support local music! #SALUTE!

Check out a full list of the winners, more pics and videos from the local artists cyphers done for the show after the jump!

Twenty x Boyz II Men (Album Review)

Review by: Robin 'Oodie' Cooper

When you hear “Motownphilly”, an introduction isn’t needed because Motown fans are no stranger to the Philly product Boyz II Men.The quartet, which usually consists of Michael McCary, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, and Shawn Stockman make another attempt at a chart-topping album without bass singer Michael. Being absent for 6 years because of health issues, he declined the reunion. After years of remakes and conflicts with record labels, Boyz II Men release their 20th anniversary LP Twenty, which is their tenth studio album and second under MSM’s Music Group.

Drake's Album Gets Leaked - GET IT HERE

Drake's album leaked over the weekend and his reaction is pretty typical considering that most artists anticipate leaks. Drizzy claims that his producer, 40, is extra protective of their projects, so what happened this time? I always think these leaks come from the artists' own camps for promotional and marketing purposes. Most leaks of major artists' projects don't hurt their record sales much because fans who support will support regardless. On his twitter, @Drake, he wrote:

 Drizzy

Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it...and take care until next time.

So needless to say, Drake's cool with it. Check out the download link after the jump and also check out the remix to "The Motto" featuring Lil Wayne and Tyga. More importantly though, go cop that album anyway, SUPPORT GOOD MUSIC!!!

NEW: Nas ft. Amy Winehouse - "Like Smoke" (LISTEN & DOWNLOAD)

Nas is back something serious and in this soulful and almost melancholy duet with Amy Winehouse, he proves that he still got it lyrically. Amy lends her famous bluesy vocals to the track adding a sad depth to the song. She really was a real talent and Nas can still kill a song so this one is definitely something special. Listen and Download below.
"I'll be out in Lodon, Camden, hunting for the answers. Why did God take away the homie? I can't say that I'm a firm believer that we all meet up in eternity. Just hope the big man show me some courtesy..." -Nas

Wale's Ambition (Album Review)

Review by: Robin 'Oodie' Cooper

Staying within the roots and passion of his music, DC native Wale reintroduces the world to his ambitious state of mind. For most, the journey has been one worth following. Before reaching mainstream status, Wale’s beginnings consisted of local go-go influenced radio hits that earned him recognition and popularity throughout his hometown. Go-go, which is the DMV’s (DC, Maryland, Virginia) unique style of music still plays a major role and can be heard throughout mixtapes that highlight the start of Wale’s 2005 music career. Working with artists such as Amy Winehouse, Talib Kweli, Chrisette Michele and a variety of other well-known artists, Wale was well on his way before the existence of his first studio album.

Drake Disses Luke & Miami?? NEW MUSIC - LISTEN & DOWNLOAD: "The Motto" & "Headlines Remix"

Drizzy dropped another track off of his upcoming Take Care album, a bonus track called "The Motto" featuring Lil Wayne has some people in the Magic City raising eyebrows that Mr. OVO might've taken a shot at Miami, or at the very least, at Luke. In a recent Miami New Times article, Luke called out Lil Wayne and Young Money (among other celebs) for not doing more to give back to Miami, where quite a few of them reside. In his verse, Drake says:
"Tell Uncle Luke I'm out in Miami too. Clubbin hard, f*ckin women, there ain't much to do. Wrist-blinged, got a condo up in Biscayne. Still getting brain from a thang, ain't sh*t changed."
Hmmm... I can definitely see how this is a shot at Luke... and saying that in Miami "there ain't much to do..." Drake gets the side-eye on this one. It's definitely ratchett of him to call out Miami. These dudes are ALWAYS here so clearly, there's something here for them.

Not gonna lie, the song itself is pretty good: decent Drake beat, good flow, nice concept and catchy but dissing the M-I-A is a BIG NO-NO homie!
